Adding to its stable of sustainable brands, Buxton Hanley will be introducing the lifestyle brand “The Joinery” to the Australian market.
The Joinery is a women-owned, sustainable and ethical product design, production and manufacturing brand based in South Africa. Their focus is on finding solutions to environmental and community issues through design.
Buxton Hanley’s Recycled plastic bottle Passport Holder is the perfect accessory for traveling. Fits all passports. Handmade in South Africa by Buxton Hanley’s talented Artisans, who have been up-skilled to produce these beautiful products.
Sisters Natalie and Kim Ellis were both living in London when their intense concern over the issue of plastic waste and desire to make a difference fuelled them to find a solution through sustainable textile innovation.
This luxury grey felt laptop bag has a sturdy leather handle and leather accessories, including a mobile phone pocket and room for documents, notebook, pens, cables, business cards, memory sticks, keys and sunglasses. A universal fit for any laptop brand, both PC or Mac up to 15.6 inch. Made from recycled plastic bottle felt fabric with vegetable tanned leather accents.
Returning to the country of their birth, the sisters approached local fibre recyclers who helped them on their journey to conceptualising a felt fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. All of the plastic bottles that go into The Joinery’s recycled fabric are collected from around South Africa. “We are on half a million plastic bottles saved from landfills and our oceans to date and are on a journey to reach one million in the near future” says Kim.
The hand made Single Wine Bottle Holder is perfect for transporting your favorite bottle of wine to and from any wine farm (or your home) all year round. Made from recycled plastic bottle felt fabric with vegetable tanned leather accents.
Innovators, creators and activists at heart, Natalie and Kim create and design all their own product ranges, from luxury Tote Bags, homeware and office collections, leisure and travel accessories to product packaging for retail, corporate and various travel industries.
This luxury Washbag is the perfect travel accessory, keeping your toiletries safe and all in one place. Made from recycled plastic bottle felt fabric with vegetable tanned leather accents. Fully lined with water resistant lining.
All of their products are made by women’s sewing co-operatives in the informal settlements of South Africa, by up-skilled artisans and sustainable production houses, contributing directly to job creation. The company often employs up to 50 women and Artisans at a time.
This sturdy, hand made Overnight Travel Bag is made from 24 recycled plastic bottles. The leather handles offer a luxurious finish. It is fully lined inside with a pocket. Perfect for travel and weekends away.
The Joinery is on a journey to ensure that all their processes are as sustainable as possible from beginning to end, from recycled fabrics, through to our sustainable packaging, donating offcuts to NGO’s and offsetting their carbon footprint.
We are committed to empowering people and our planet. We believe in being kind to our planet and fair to our people, one plastic bottle at a time.

“The Joinery embodies everything we believe in,” says Caryn Hanley, Managing Director of Buxton Hanley. “Sustainability is about balancing people, the planet and profit and very few companies have been able to make such a difference on so many levels”.
The Joinery’s name is based on their founding principles of collaborating with communities, artisans, designers and businesses to create products that promote sustainability. “Our makers are able to support their families and improve their communities and it is this that drives us to support local and why we do what we do. We are committed to creating more employment and to supporting these talented women and artisans.” Says Kim.
“To find luxury products of this quality that have been sustainably produced is a challenge”, says Caryn. “We believe that this range fills a big gap in the market and are excited to be representing a business that is visibly and measurably making a difference to peoples lives on a daily basis. We are looking forward to being part of their journey towards reaching that 1 million bottle mark and beyond.”
Having won the PETCO Innovators Award in 2017 (Watch video), the Ellis sisters are continually adding to their range of lifestyle products and produce a large number of bespoke products for corporates and hospitality business every year.
The Joinery’s product range and bespoke creations are available in Australia and New Zealand exclusively through Buxton Hanley.
