For Spring/Summer 2019 Nicholas K visited their roots to build their future
Last September, the Friday before New York Fashion Week, the brand lost almost everything — Nicholas K’s design and photo studio, showroom and a large part of their design archive due to a fire on the ground floor of their office building.
While sifting through the remnants of the archive they were reminded of the defining characteristic of the brand — their past collections were equally relevant today and seamlessly integrated with current collections. Taking a break from expedition shoots, Nicholas K opted to re-discover and refine these pieces and create a retail environment to more holistically present it. Confucius says “Study the past, if you would divine the future.”
This season is a testament to their perseverance of spirit and their designs. The longevity of relevance is a hallmark paradigm to conscious design and that which Nicholas K aspires. With just that in mind, Nicholas K created a visceral environment that fused conscious sustainability with utilitarianism to design a store that feels modern, ethereal, and minimal.
White washed floors and towering plants create the feeling of life, while white parachutes cascading downward shed a soft glowing light thru the dressing canopies. Shou Sugi Ban live edge furniture placed throughout, further showcasing smart design — highlighting natures artistic movements coupled with eco sensible treatments.
Our brand was confined in a wholesale environment. We needed a canvas to share our vision, interface with our clients and educate them about the versatility of each design and the fibers we use. We also wanted a vehicle for collaboration – a place to exhibit work of like-minded and talented artists. This season, we teamed up with Trippen Shoes from Germany to collaborate on their iconic Metro F Shoe.
