With another New York fashion week over, it is hard not to pause, ponder and take pride in the talent that dozens of designers showcased on the runway for Spring/Summer 2011. If Milan and Paris had their ready-to-wear menswear shows for next year's hottest seasons back in June, New York reserved their fashion week for September to show, in many cases, a vibrant, optimistic and colourful mood for both men's and women's fashion for next year.
It was clear from the shows that some recent and current trends, such as denim on denim, shorts, dip dye fabrics, chunky knits, trench coats, sportswear fusion and olive and light grey tones will still persist for next year.
However, New York menswear collections for S/S 2011 dazzled through a general mastery of colour, with its array of vibrant blues and oranges allied to a varied palette of pastels. Garments with elegant tailoring filled the runways, and splendid shades of tan leather for impressive lines of accessories and footwear seemed auspiciously ubiquitous.
Michael Bastian proved to be one of the hardest working forces in menswear, showing both a collection under his name and a range for Gant.
